Somewhere in PA
August 29, 2024Once I left Ohio and entered Pennsylvania I was on the hunt for amazing waterfalls. I am on a bit of a theme right now as I travel the Northeast U.S. There are a good amount of waterfalls in Pennsylvania and I have made several attempts to see each one I come across and unfortunately I was quick to discover that I couldn’t access a few of them.
That is how it goes right? Choose your destination and roll with the punches. It wasn’t long after entering Pennsylvania and I arrived at Quaker Falls in Edinburg, PA. Once I pulled in and rounded the short curve that getting back out was going to be an adventure on it’s own.
Quaker Falls Recreation Area is undergoing a wonderful upgrade. I saw they are adding a privacy wall between the falls and the highway. They have added in new pathways and 3 observation decks to the area. There is also what looked like a sheltered picnic area going in.
The above photo is the only on I was able to get of Quaker Falls. Unknown to me my photos were not saving to my SD card and the dozens of shots were gone when I went to transfer to my computer. Do think this is still a great picture and I can’t wait to see what it looks like after editing.
I continued down highway 224 East looking for where to stop next. Searching the internet for attractions and sights I found Alpha Falls located near Portersville, PA off of Highway 422. This is an awesome area where I spend most of my day.
There are multiple trails that are interesting to hike, the main goes for more that 7.5 miles. The trails aren’t your easy dirt paths, they consist of a variety of man-made steps and large rocks. Watch your footing on these trails it wasn’t hard for me to loos balance and catch myself from falling.
The river is wonderful to see, with areas calm and peaceful and areas with rapids splashing water here and there. I hiked around for about an hour or so and decided it would be best to not continue the other 6 miles of trail since Alpha Falls was behind me. After making my way back to the parking area I decided to set up my photos and table and see if I could introduce myself to some new people and wait for the temperature to drop a bit.
Before I knew it it was going on 3:00 in the afternoon and I still hadn’t see Alpha Falls so I made my way back on the trails with Brook and we made our way there. The hike was enjoyable and finding the falls was an easy challenge.
Alpha Falls wasn’t as Impressive as I had seen in my searches I think water level is lower now than when the photos I saw were taken. There were multiple fallen trees blocking view points and making it difficult to move around to find a good point to shoot from.
Shortly after getting the above photo it was time to make our way back to the RV and find a place to camp for the night before it got dark so we ventured on.
Back on Highway 422 East we drove to Butler, PA for the night. You can read what happens next here.
